Obituary of Mary Ellen Carmichael

Miss Mary Ellen Carmichael, age 89, of Newton, died Monday afternoon, October 2, 2006, in Wesley Manor Methodist Home, following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Sunday, October 8, 2006, at Newton United Methodist Church with Reverend David Willis officiating. Interment will follow in Newton City Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 P. M. until 6:00 P. M. Saturday afternoon. Miss Carmichael was born September 2, 1917 in Newton to the late Bertha Childs Carmichael and John Gilbert Carmichael. She attended Newton Institute and taught Elementary School for three years. She was a legal secretary for Guy Hardwick in Dothan, and then served as executive secretary for the Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. She was executive secretary to Dr. Phillip Hamm at Wallace Community College until her retirement. Miss Carmichael was a caregiver for her mother and her sister, Dorothy Ferrell, until their deaths. She was a member of Newton United Methodist Church where she served as Church Organist for 30 years, was a member of The United Methodist Women, and was always involved in the governing bodies of the Church. Miss Carmichael also served on the Newton Town Council. Survivors include two nephews: T. Michael Ferrell and his wife, Rebecca, of Abingdon, Virginia and J. Schuyler "Sky" Ferrell and his wife, Rosemary, of Tucson, Arizona, grandchildren: Weldon Ferrell, University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, Sarah Ferrell, University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Spencer Ferrell of Abingdon, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to Newton United Methodist Church Building Fund, 209 East King Street, Newton, Alabama 36352.
