Mr. Joseph Ellison Sneed, Jr., a resident of Ozark, passed away Saturday evening, April 9, 2011, in Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 78. Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, from the First United Methodist Church in Ozark with Reverend Dr. Christian Eckert and Reverend Dr. Jason Thrower officiating. His body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time on Tuesday. Interment will follow in Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends Monday evening at the funeral home from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Mr. Sneed was born October 18, 1932 in Decatur, Alabama to the late Ruth Chunn Sneed and Joseph Ellison Sneed, Sr. In 1957, Mr. Sneed graduated from the University of Alabama. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After returning from military service, he moved to Mobile and was associated with Merchants National Bank until January of 1962 when he moved to Ozark to work with The Bank of Ozark. He served as Executive Vice-President for a number of years and in 1969 was elected as Chief Executive Officer until his retirement from banking in 1986. Under his capable leadership, direction, and supervision, the new French-New Orleans style bank was constructed and the banking operation was moved to downtown Ozark in the building that is currently Wells Fargo. After his retirement from banking he served as a Real Estate Agent and Broker for several years. Honors and memberships include Ozark Rotary Club member for 25 years where he was President in 1980-81. He was honored with the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1982 for Outstanding Service. He was also a member of the American Bankers Association and the Alabama Bankers Association. He served as Group Ten Chairman of the Alabama Bankers Association in 1973-74 and was presented the Outstanding Group Chairman Award. He served on the Board of Equalization in Ozark for a number of years and served as Chairman of this Board. He is survived by his wife, Celeste Adams Sneed of Ozark; his four sons, Shaw Sneed of Pensacola, Florida, Joseph Sneed III (Deb) of Birmingham, Frederick Sneed (Melanie) of Enterprise, and Benjamin Sneed (Mandi) of Ozark; his stepchildren, Frances Steagall (Henry) of Ozark, Charles Woods (Lynda) of Ozark, James Woods (Joyce) of Jemison, and Celeste Fleisher (David) of Destin, FL; one brother, Clifton Chunn Sneed (Nancy) of Gulfport; one sister, Ruth Twitty (Tom) of Birmingham. "Grandpa Joe" has sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be former employees of the Bank of Ozark. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ozark, 167 East Broad Street, Ozark, Alabama 36360; or to Vivian B.
