Obituary of Carolyn Smith Foster
Please share a memory of Carolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Susie Carolyn Smith Foster, beloved mother and sister, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2008 at her home in Ozark. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 20, 2008, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Reverend Greg Aman officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark City Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be in the Funeral Home Chapel from 9:30 A.M. Tuesday until service time. Carolyn was born July 2, 1914 in Ozark where she lived almost all her life. She attended Dale County High School and graduated in 1932. In November of that year she married Dewitt Foster. After the births of five daughters and a son, she began nursing school at Lurlene B. Wallace Technical School and graduated in 1952. Many around Ozark still remember her as Dr. Petrey's nurse where she began her nursing career. She followed that with 22 years of nursing at Lyster Army Hospital at Fort Rucker. Carolyn was preceded in death by her former husband, Dewitt; parents, Ida Bell Mizell and James Alexander Smith, brothers James and Edwin (E.V.) Smith, sisters Julia Frances Smith and Marguerite Walker. She is survived by an older sister, Myra Jackson of Birmingham and brother, Rutledge (Jane) Smith of Jasper, Texas. Her children, Suzanne Frederick, Panama City Beach, FL; Fay Tindol, Phenix City, AL; Carolyn (Paul) Kolb of Navarre, FL; Mary Mizelle of Ozark and San Francisco; Frances (Eric) Jorgensen, Nevada City, California; and son Amos Mizell (Carol) Foster, Pensacola, Florida. There are thirteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Carolyn was a lifelong member of the Ozark Baptist Church where she was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Retired Nurses Association and for many years following her retirement volunteered her nursing skills to organizations around Ozark that offered free health checks. She said she thought it was the duty of the retired to give back to the community if they were able; her life was one of service to others. She, with the help of her parents, raised six children and she cared for both her parents and a maiden sister in their last years. During her last years she suffered some of the frailties of old age but remained good spirited until the end. She loved her children's visits, and they were fortunate to be able to spend time with her during her last years. Her daughter Mary lived with her and kept her healthy and happy and granddaughter Suzie Tindol of Montgomery was always there when needed. The family is deeply grateful to the nurses and staff of Wiregrass Hospice and Dale Medical Center Home Health for their service and kindness. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Wiregrass Hospice, P.O. Box Drawer 2127, Dothan, Alabama 36302-2127.
