Obituary of Linda Spears Childers

Ms. Linda Spears Childers, age 65, of Duluth, Georgia, formerly of Ozark, died Tuesday morning, June 26, 2007. Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M. Friday, June 29, 2007, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home of Ozark with Reverend Greg Aman officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in the Bertha Community, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. Thursday evening. Ms. Childers was born in Ozark to Elma and J.C. Spears. She attended Carroll High School, served as 4-H president in 1958, and went on to graduate as valedictorian in 1960. Pursuing a career as an educator, Ms. Childers received her bachelor's degree in education and later her master's degree from Troy State University. She taught for more than thirty years with the majority of those years teaching honors English and Literature at Carroll High School. Ms. Childers was instrumental in helping to start the honors program at Carroll High. She also served as advisor for the Carroll High yearbook for several years. After retirement, she moved to the Atlanta area to be near her children and grandchildren. Ms. Childers is survived by her children, Mr. and Mrs. Mike (Terri) Childers of Atlanta, Mr. Wes Childers of New York City, New York, her grandchildren, Ben Childers (11) and Julia Childers (8) both of Atlanta, and her sisters, Sarah Elswick of Big Rock, Virginia, Shirley Lingerfelt of Tallahassee, Florida, and Carolyn Hammond of Dothan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 2346 West Main Street - Suite 3, Dothan, Alabama 36301, as Ms. Childers was a breast cancer survivor.
