Obituary of Janet Garner Stevenson

Mrs. Janet Garner Stevenson, age 74, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2007 in Woodlands, Texas, following an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A. M. Monday, May 14, 2007, in the Chapel of The First United Methodist Church of Ozark with Reverend Dr. Christian Eckert and Reverend Marty Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Janet was born April 27, 1932, in Ozark, and spent all of her childhood here. In 1954, she graduated from Auburn University and married 1st Lt. John Addison Stevenson of Sumter, South Carolina. "Steve" was employed by Schlumberger Wells Services which transferred them to New Orleans, Louisiana. This became their primary home for the next 50 years. Over the years, Janet was a devoted homemaker, a gourmet cook for friends and family, an avid gardener, a voracious reader, and an accomplished bridge player. She and Steve were passionate about travel and shared many wonderful adventures and memories together during their numerous trips. She was a faithful member of Woodland Presbyterian Church in New Orleans where she served as Deacon and Elder. Janet freely gave her time to the United Churches of Algiers as well as the Adult Literacy Program sponsored by the YMCA. She was also active for many years in the Homemaker's Club, Welcome Neighbors, and the New Orleans Fern Society. Janet will be remembered by all as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a woman highly regarded for her warm and friendly personality. She lived by grace and generosity. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Addison Stevenson, and her parents "Dick" and Louise Garner of Ozark. She is survived by her three children, Louise Marino, John Stevenson, and Mason Stevenson. She was also the loving grandmother of seven grandchildren: Ashley Marino, Brian Marino, Clark Marino, Trent Stevenson, Travis Stevenson, Laura Stevenson, and James Stevenson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial contribution be directed to the Sunshine House of Woodland Presbyterian Church, 5824 Berkley Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana 70131, or to Westview Memorial Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 484, Ozark, Alabama 36361.
