She is survived by daughter Annice Matthews Glarrow, grandson Matthew Glarrow and wife Mary Sylvest Aplin and their son John Thomas Aplin, all of Montgomery; son Edsel Ford Matthews, Jr. (Eddie) and wife Kathy Wibbs Chase Matthews, their children, Virginia Chase Ralls, husband James and son Vincent, David Chase, wife Kayla Hall Chase, and their children Savanna and Madi, Eddie Matthews III and wife Summer Awad Matthews all of Pensacola; and son Elec Matthews and wife Randy Parker Matthews of Ozark, and several nieces and nephews. She was the last survivor of her siblings and their spouses as well as her late husband Edsel Ford Matthews Sr., his siblings and their spouses.
She was a devout Christian, very active in her home church, Ozark Baptist in her younger years, serving as director of the nursery department. She continued her faith through television ministries after illnesses prevented her from attending services. She had a love for dogs, especially her last fur baby, Maggie. In her earlier years she was employed as a bookkeeper for B.F. Williams, Douglas Brown, Bob’s Pest-X and other companies. She was trained by Martha Pullen in the fine art of French Hand sewing. She shared her talents by teaching sewing, smocking and French hand sewing. She also owned The Back Door Shop, specializing in sewing and handcrafted items. Many of her handmade dresses are heirlooms and treasured by families throughout Alabama. She was accomplished in the kitchen specializing in deserts and down-home Southern cooking. Family and friends knew they could always find her in the kitchen! She was a beautiful, true Southern lady!
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributes may be made to Ozark Baptist Church, earmark Nursery Department, 282 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360, Ozark-Dale County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2502, Ozark, Alabama 36361, or one’s favorite charity.
Our most heartfelt thanks for care, concern and love to Adrian Holman and Holman Funeral Home staff, Kindred Hospice staff: her spiritual advisor Brother Charles, social worker Kerri and nurse Brett; and to the staff of Ozark Heath and Rehabilitation who took care of our dear mother, loved her and laughed with her till the end, especially Jimmie, Ty, Brooke, Kimberly, Tracey, Brittany, Chelsie (“Candy”), Kiesha, Anastasia, Jennifer, Nicky, Michelle, and Clara. God bless each and every one of you!
