MSG John Edward “Jack” Long (United States Army, Retired), a resident of Ozark, died Monday evening, July 13, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family. He was 91 years old.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 16, 2020, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home and Cremations in Ozark with Reverend O’Neal Brown and Reverend Michael Lawler officiating. Interment will follow with Military Honors in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ozark Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until service time.
MSG Long was born January 16, 1929 in Americus, Georgia to the late Marion Wright Long and Agnes Eudora Goodroe Long. He joined the United States Army in 1948 at Jacksonville, Florida and served as a Supply Officer, retiring in 1969 as a Master Sergeant. He served in Korea and Vietnam, receiving a Bronze Star and the O. C. C. Medal for his service in Germany. Following his military career, he worked as a Security Guard at Lowe Field at Fort Rucker and retired in the mid 1980’s. MSG Long and his family moved to Ozark in 1968 where he and his late wife were members of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Jack was a very family-oriented man. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Betty Anneliese Long; his son, Herbert Long; four brothers, Marion Wright Long, Jr., Cicero Kick Long, Albert Eugene Long, and James Clifford Long.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Marilynn and Steve Silavent of Ozark; daughter-in-law, Angie Long of Ozark; three grandchildren, Holly (Mark) Chancey of Ozark, Brad (Julie) Long of Pike Road, and Jessica (William) Sanders of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; eight great grandchildren, Dorian Chancey, Chase Morrill, Jack Chancey, Edie Chancey, Jason Chancey, Libby Sanders, Anna Long and Ellie Long. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36111; or to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 2926 Andrews Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
