Obituary of John Henry Dickinson

Mr. John Henry Dickinson, a resident of Echo, passed away Friday, June 9, 2023, at his home. He was 99 years old. Funeral services for Mr. Dickinson will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 16, 2023 from Echo Methodist Church with Reverend Alan Meyer and Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends Friday in the church from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Mr. Dickinson was born March 23, 1924 in Richmond, Indiana to the late Wilber Harris Dickinson and Rheba Mildred Smith Dickinson. John grew up on a farm using draft horses. He started his working career in 1942 with the Pennsylvania Railroad until World War II when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the European Theater of Operation. In 1946 he started a job with Richmond Power and Light until 1949. John moved to Echo, Alabama in 1949 and then moved to Chipley, Florida where he ran a large farm until 1957 when he took a job with the Southeast Telephone Company in Tallahassee and moved to Madison, Florida in 1959. He relocated back to Tallahassee in 1964 and was made manager of the DeFuniak Springs, Florida location until 1971. He moved to Ozark, Alabama with General Telephone Company retiring in 1987 as a manager. John attended the University of Kansas for training in telephone communications in 1966 and also had attended Perdue University in 1947 in agricultural courses. He is a member of the Ozark Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Leora Roberson Dickinson; his daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Dale Golden; two sisters, Alice D. Smith (Sam) and Carolyn Dickinson; one brother, Richard Dickinson (Marge). He is survived by two daughters, Katie D. Craddock (Phil) of Echo and Emily D. Johnson (Tommy) of DeFuniak Springs; six granddaughters, Miki Botel (Bob) of Tallahassee, Devan Grayson (Wes) of Montgomery, Lauren Kerchner (Aaron) of Bertha, Lindsay Cellon (Jonathan) of Troy, Jordan Johnston (Philip) of Montgomery and Libbi Thomas (Nathan) of DeFuniak Springs. Sixteen great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews also survive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a Christian Ministry of your choice.
