Eugene Sullivan was a true genius in construction. A humble man who never paraded his gift, he just got the job done without fanfare. In the mid-fifties he constructed a dome of a hotel on an island at Destin, Florida that most considered impossible. He thought nothing of it, contrary to Portland cement’s bewilderment. He knew the delicacy involved in compression construction in the making of a dome.
Factually, he was instrumental in making a railcar restoration facility railroad track perfectly level for two miles. He used water in a clear-plastic hose as the leveling device, not a transit level tripod.
From my point of view, the historic preservation of the Holman House on Broad Street requirements was met due to his restoration integrity and his honest character. The objective of the restoration effort was compliance with Historic Preservation Law rather than transforming the house into a Home Depot commercial. He saw that history was not betrayed. Certain structural features, necessary for its firmness integrity, were added but kept out of sight. As difficult as the restoration was, he seemed to see it done with ease. He mobilized over three hundred different craftsman that were devoted to seeing the end results as worthy of their merit.
What a great blessing it is to have seen this great artist at work. He was wise in that he knew what it was to be a child of God, membership in the bride of Christ and to being a joint heir with Christ. Now has has died having lived by letting God work in him both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Look forward to knowing him eternally.
