I never met Leonard, but the memories of others who did and wrote about him have inspired me to be a better man and reenactor.

Leonard was a sweet man. He helped us pick our first pocket knifes. He was always nice to us annoying little girls. He was always patient in answering our questions about nothing particular. We would always liked listening to his voice when he told us stories about his days in the service. He had that gravely voice that everybody liked listening to it always would put Emmy to sleep. We will always miss him. We love you Leonard. Emmy and Sue Nowalk.

Dear Mrs. Bast & family, I only knew Leonard for the past three years from our times together at Horseshoe Bend and Fort Toulouse, as a member of Mark Hubb's unit - Jackson's Lifeguards. I will always remember Leonards sharp wit and keen sense of military bearing. He was a true friend and a great American warrior who could always be counted on to get things done right. He will be dearly remembered and surely missed by all. Yours most fondly, Tod Jordan

Leonard was a "man's man" for the guys, while we women thought of him as a "sweetheart of a guy". One of the kindest men I have ever known. Whenever I smell a "Backwoods" cigar, or have some "sweet" in my coffee, I will think of Leonard, and smile for having known him. Sleep well.

I respected Leonard for his service to his country and to his living history passtime. He seemed to love his community's history and the fellowship he recieved from military fellowship. He involved himself in living history, but he is one of the few who actually helped to make history in our Nation's previous conflicts.

Both Cynda and I are deeply saddened by Leonard's passing. He truly was an American Hero. His gruff voice, and those wonderful stories will be missed around the campfire at living history events throughout the South. We were honored to know him. All of us are better for it. With deepest sympathies, Steve and Cynda Abolt and the members of the 7th US Infantry Living History Association
