A Tribute to My Grandmother To quote Shakespeare: oWhat is in a name? A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.o Matilda Rose Kane. She was my grandmother. She was a mother, a sister, a great-grandmother. She was a friend. When I was a child, I learned she embodied the word oGrandmothero. Comfort, caring, security, love, maker of yummy things! When I became an adult, I learned she embodied the word owomano. Strong, independent, fascinating, loyal, full of grace and dignity. Classic. As I continue my own journey through life, I can only hope that I can embody the same sense of spirit she leaves behind. What is in a name? Matilda Rose Kane. Kindness, caring, strength, beauty, devout Catholic, grace, dignity, family, and lovea

I simply want to say thank you to Elaine, Kathy, Brian and Alan for so unselfishly sharing your mom with me for more than 30 years. She was a wonderful lady that will never be forgotten. You will never know how much she loved her ENTIRE family. Although I know very few of you I feel that through the years I have come to know you through the stories of your growing up, your going to school, your getting married and your children. She was one proud mom, grandma, and great-grandma. More than anything I will miss our letters to one another and the friendship we shared for so many years. I am planning on attending the graveside service in Saugerties on Nov. 29th. I hope you are all doing well realizing your loved one is now at peace, and she was ready as she indicated in recent letters to me. God's blessings to all. Don

I remember: walks with Grandma (she loved to walk); Holidays at Grandma's Saugerties, NY house (Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving! yum, Christmas)and all the family that attended; skating at the back of her house; the big tree with the tire swing; exploring her dark basement; the smell of her kitchen - savory food mixed with a natural gas smell; a trip to Peekskill, NY and the "coo-coo clock store"; birthday cards with the dollar amount for the age you turned!; the time she moved to Charleston; visiting her in Colorado; her meeting my son for the first time!; trips we made with Mom shuttling between Charleston and Ozark; her kind kiss, reminding me I was her grandson, ...and loved. Explaining to Logan, my little one, why I was going away for the weekend and that My Grandmother had passed...he suddenly became emotional, which he rarely does, and tears came to his soft eyes. He exclaimed "I don't want your Grandma die. I love her!"--he sobbed. I told him I love her too, but it was her time to go. She is at peace now, and will be from now on. God Bless, ...be at peace Grandma. I love you too.

Grandma, it took me quite off guard tonight, the eve of your memorial, when your great grand daughter (Maleah Rose), through her big brown 4 year old tearful eyes came to me with great conviction that "we can't forget grandma." Your memory is alive within us all and although you are missed, I am reminded that physical death is just the beginning of another path that our spirit life must take. I told Maleah that tug on her heart tonight was maybe her great grandma telling her hello and that she is loved. Thank you grandma for tugging my heart.....

Prayers for comfort are being said for the entire family. I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard to let go of someone who has been such a constant in your life for so long. If memory serves me correct I had the pleasure of meeting Aunt Til many years ago when she came to Arkansas to visit Grandma Ethelredis Kane Walker Austin. Elizabeth Marie Walker was my mother.

To Elaine, Alan, Kathy, Brian, Erin, Michael & all of your families: I know this is not an easy time, we always think are parents & grandparents will be around forever. Your Mom lived a long & healthy life except for the last few years. I am sure she knows how much she was loved and she did appreciate all of the care that each one of you gave to her.
