Obituary of James E. Head

Mr. James E. Head, Jr., age 88, of Ozark, died Wednesday evening, May 4, 2005, in Dale Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 A. M. Saturday, May 7, 2005 from Ozark Baptist Church with Reverend Greg Aman and Reverend Bill Hix officiating. Interment will be at 4:00 P. M. in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Hale County, Alabama, with Reverend Dr. Donald Payne, Pastor of Forrest Lake Baptist Church, officiating, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. Friday evening. Mr. Head was born September 8, 1916 in Grayson, Georgia (Gwinnett County). He moved to Hale County, Alabama where he began building bridges and met his wife to be, Doris Hutt, to whom he was married for 66 years. Mr. Head, Adrian Skelton, and Joe L. Hutt founded Madison Construction Company in 1955, moving to Ozark in 1957 with a contract to build Brown's subdivision. His career spanned over 50 years. During this period of time he constructed a vast amount of projects, ranging from schools, banks, Ozark Civic Center, Dale County Court House, and many, many more. Mr. Head was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 88th Armor Division in Italy. His love of farming the family's timberland in Havannah, Alabama was one of his greatest past times, which he enjoyed with his brother-in-law, the late Joe L. Hutt. He was an active member of Ozark Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon from August 13, 1978 until his death. He was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, served as Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, and the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Civitan Club and the Association of General Contractors (AGC). Mr. Head was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Johnson Head and James Emett Head, Sr., two brothers, V. G. Head and Charlie Frank Head, and his son-in-law, John L. Brittain. Survivors include his wife, Doris Hutt Head, Ozark, one daughter, Jerrie Brittain, Charleston, South Carolina, one son, Jim Head and his wife, Debbie, Ozark, seven grandchildren, Bonnie Geer and her husband, Gordon, Charleston, South Carolina, Gina Baker and her husband, Michael, Hampton, Virginia, Shannah Mallory and her husband, Patrick, Dothan, Brent Head and his wife, Cindy, Birmingham, Bret Head, Ozark, Tiffany Kelley and her husband, Justin, Auburn, Kelley Peak, Panama City, Florida, two sisters, Blondine Mosley, Snellville, Georgia, and Judy Pope, Atlanta. Nine great grandchildren also survive. Serving as pallbearers will be: Jerry Williams, Neil Suarez, Larry Williams, Joe Outlaw, Travis Skelton, Lloyd Flowers, and Buddy Skelton. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Friendship Sunday School Class; Harold Dick, Aubrey Hale, Roy C. Harris, H. Jack Mizell, Dan Shirah, Jack S. Strickland, Dan Walding, and Danny Walding, and also Ralph Medley, Willie Morrow, Carroll Jackson, Adrian Skelton, and Gordon Skelton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to Ozark Baptist Church Building Fund, 282 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360. Service Information
