Obituary of Dorothy Smith Gibbons

Mrs. Dorothy Smith Gibbons, age 75, of Ozark, died Wednesday, February 14, 2007, following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M. Saturday, February 17, 2007, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Reverend Dean Allerheilligen officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 A.M. Saturday until service time. At other times the family will be at 147 Sweetwater Drive in Headland. Mrs. Gibbons was born November 13, 1931 in Opp, Alabama to the late Stella Gohagen Smith and William David Smith. She lived most recently in Dothan, but grew up in Clayton, later relocating to Ozark. Mrs. Gibbons completed nursing school in 1977 and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Dale Medical Center until her retirement. "Miss Dorothy", as she was affectionately called, loved her family, friends, and Church. She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Dothan. For a brief period she was able to attend the Taylor Senior Center, where she really enjoyed her new friends and activities. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gibbons was preceded in death by her husband, Archie M. Gibbons, her two sons, David and Daniel Gibbons, and her brother, Donnie F. Smith. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Elaine and Rick Smith of Headland, and Emily Gibbons of Hickory, North Carolina, one daughter-in-law, Christine Gibbons of Midland City, one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Janie Smith of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. The family would like to express a special thank you to the nurses and all of the staff of Extendicare Health and Rehab Facility and also Wiregrass Hospice for their care and compassion.
