Obituary of William Martin Godwin

Mr. William Martin Godwin “Mr. Billy” passed away September 6, 2013 following a brief illness. He was 95.
Funeral services will be graveside 10:30 A. M. Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in Claybank Cemetery with Reverend Dr. Billy D. Gaither officiating. Interment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
Mr. Godwin was born September 17, 1917 in Ozark, Alabama. Billy was a pioneer in developing family properties around Ozark and contributing to its growth. Regent Forest Subdivision was one of his proudest achievements along with Godwin Station Shopping Center on U. S. 231 Hwy in 1991. He served honorably in the U. S. Army during World War II. After the war he was employed by the U. S. Postal Service in Ozark for many years. He had to retire from that career earlier than planned due to knee injuries suffered during the war. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mavious Howell Godwin; his son, William Martin Godwin, Jr.; his parents, Nathan and Willie Martin Godwin; one brother Robert Godwin; one sister, Bess Godwin Mizelle.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Karen Lea Anthony of Pinellas Park, Florida;
three nephews, Dr. John E. (Kathy) Godwin of Portland, Oregon, James N. Godwin of Montgomery, Alabama, and John T. (Sharon) Mizelle of Mary Esther, Florida.
Billy’s family and friends give special thanks and sincere appreciation to Juanita Mims his longtime companion and caregiver. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Claybank Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 946, Ozark, Alabama 36361; or to Vivian B. Adams School, 2047 Stuart Tarter Road, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
